Sanjaya said:
“Having seen the Pandava army arranged in a military formation, Prince Duryodhana approached his teacher, Dronacharya, and spoke the following words, ‘Behold this mighty army of the sons of Pāndu, O Teacher, arranged in a disciplined military formation by your intelligent disciple, the son of Drupada.’ “
Commentary
Sanjaya recounts the scene on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. After observing the well-organized formation of the Pandava army, Duryodhana, the eldest Kaurava prince and the leader of the Kaurava forces, approached his teacher and military strategist, Dronacharya to seek his advice and to express his thoughts and concerns regarding the battle that was about to commence. He draws Dronacharya’s attention to the grandeur and strength of the Pandava army, led by their wise and skilled commander, Dhrishtadyumna, the son of Drupada.
Duryodhana acknowledges the formidable nature of the Pandava army, describing it as a “mahati chāmūm” – a great army. He emphasizes the fact that it has been strategically arranged and organized by Dhrishtadyumna, who is recognized for his military prowess. Dhrishtadyumna is depicted as a wise and capable disciple, who possesses intelligence and strategic thinking, which are essential in military leadership.
By acknowledging the strength of the opposing army, Duryodhana seeks to emphasize the magnitude of the upcoming battle and the importance of Dronacharya’s guidance and leadership.
