“One who performs actions for My sake, considering Me as the supreme goal, devoted to Me, free from attachment, without enmity towards any being, that person reaches Me, O Arjuna.”
Lord Krishna describes the characteristics of a true devotee who attains union with Him. He states that such a devotee is one who performs actions (karma) solely for the sake of Krishna, considering Him as the ultimate goal and purpose of his actions. The devotee’s actions are motivated by a deep sense of devotion (bhakti) towards Krishna. He engages in his duties and responsibilities with the intention of pleasing and serving the Lord. His actions are an expression of their love and dedication to Krishna. The true devotee is free from attachment (sangavarjita). He performs his duties without seeking personal gain or being driven by selfish desires. His actions are selfless and motivated by love for Krishna rather than material or egoistic aspirations. The devotee is also described as being free from enmity (nirvairah) towards all beings. He harbors no ill will or animosity towards others. His heart is filled with love, compassion, and goodwill for all living beings. He sees the divine presence in everyone and treats others with kindness and respect. Krishna assures Arjuna that such a devoted soul, who acts selflessly for His sake, without attachment and enmity, will ultimately reach Him. The devotee’s unwavering love and dedication will lead him to the ultimate union with Krishna, where he merges his individual consciousness with the divine. This verse emphasizes the importance of selfless devotion and the qualities that define a true devotee. It teaches that devotion coupled with righteous action, detachment, and a compassionate outlook towards all beings is the path to attain the eternal union with the Supreme.
