“Those people who perform severe penances contrary to the scriptures, driven by false pride, ego, and the strength of their desires, they torture the elements within their own bodies and Me who dwells within the body. Know them to be of demonic tendencies.”

Commentary
Lord Krishna describes the characteristics and actions of individuals with demonic tendencies who engage in severe penances or austerities against the principles of scriptures and righteous conduct. These individuals are driven by false pride, ego, and strong desires, and their penances are not in accordance with the prescribed guidelines of spiritual practices.

Ashāstravihitam tapo jana: These individuals perform severe penances or austerities that are not sanctioned by the scriptures. They disregard the established guidelines and regulations laid down by the scriptures for spiritual practices. Their tapas or penances are unfounded and lack a proper spiritual basis.

Dambhahankārasanyuktah: They are driven by false pride and ego. Their motivations for performing austerities are rooted in a distorted sense of self-importance and the desire for personal glorification. They seek to display their spiritual prowess and gain recognition from others.

Kāmarāgabalānvitaah: They are driven by strong desires and attachments. Their penances are motivated by the fulfillment of sensual cravings, worldly pleasures, and material gains. Their spiritual practices are tainted by their attachment to sensual gratification, rather than seeking higher spiritual realization.

Karṣhayantaḥ śharīra-sthaṁ bhūta-grāmam achetasaḥ: These individuals torment the elements within their own bodies. Through their extreme penances, they subject their physical bodies to severe austerities and self-inflicted suffering. They fail to understand the sanctity of the body as a temple of the divine and instead subject it to harsh treatment.

māṁ chaivāntaḥ śharīra-sthaṁ tān viddhy āsura-niśhchayān: They also torment Me, who dwells within the bodies of all living beings. They fail to recognize the divine presence within themselves and others. Their actions demonstrate a lack of understanding and reverence for the Supreme Being, causing harm to both them and the divine presence within.

These verses caution against engaging in penances or austerities that are driven by ego, desires, and disregard for scriptural principles. True spiritual practices should be rooted in humility, selflessness, and a genuine quest for higher spiritual realization. It is important to follow the guidance of scriptures and adhere to righteous conduct while pursuing spiritual practices.
