“Understand that knowledge to be in the mode of goodness by which one sees the same Supreme Soul dwelling equally in all beings, undivided among the divided.”

Commentary

Lord Krishna describes the nature of knowledge in the mode of goodness (sattva gunā). He explains that true knowledge is characterized by perceiving the presence of the Supreme Soul or the divine consciousness in all living beings, without any sense of division or discrimination.

Perception of the Supreme Soul: Knowledge in the mode of goodness allows one to recognize and realize the underlying unity of all beings. It transcends the external differences of forms, species, or identities and perceives the divine essence that resides within each living entity. This perception goes beyond the superficial aspects and connects with the eternal essence that exists in everyone. Equanimity and Equality: The person possessing sattvic knowledge sees the Supreme Soul as present equally in all beings. There is no bias, favoritism, or discrimination based on external factors such as social status, race, gender, or species. This knowledge brings about a deep sense of unity, compassion, and respect for all forms of life, as they are seen as manifestations of the same divine consciousness.

Undivided amidst divisions: Sattvic knowledge recognizes the unity of existence despite the apparent diversity and divisions in the world. It understands that behind the multiplicity of forms, there is an underlying oneness that connects all beings. This knowledge allows one to go beyond the superficial differences and perceive the unifying thread that binds all of creation.

The verse emphasizes that such knowledge, which perceives the unbroken presence of the Supreme Soul in all beings and remains undisturbed by divisions, is considered to be in the mode of goodness. It is a transformative understanding that fosters harmony, compassion, and unity among individuals.

This verse highlights the sattvic knowledge that enables one to perceive the eternal essence of the Supreme Soul dwelling equally in all beings. It emphasizes the importance of transcending divisions, embracing unity, and developing a deep sense of connection and respect for all forms of life. Sattvic knowledge brings about a higher level of consciousness and nurtures a harmonious relationship with the world and its inhabitants.
