Commentary

Lord Krishna describes the nature of actions performed in the mode of ignorance (tamas gunā). He outlines the characteristics of such actions as follows:

Anubandham kshayam: The action is undertaken without considering the long-term consequences or outcomes. There is a lack of foresight and a disregard for the potential harm or negative impact that may result from the action.

Himsa anapekshya: The action is performed without considering the harm caused to oneself or others. There is a lack of empathy, compassion, and consideration for the well-being and welfare of others.

Paurusham: The action is carried out without considering one’s own abilities, limitations, or appropriateness. There is a tendency to engage in activities that are beyond one’s capacity or competence, leading to inefficiency or ineffectiveness.

Mohād ārabhyate karma: The action is initiated out of delusion, confusion, or ignorance. There is a lack of clarity, understanding, or proper discernment regarding the nature of the action or its consequences.

Actions performed in the mode of ignorance are characterized by a lack of awareness, discernment, and responsibility. Individuals driven by the mode of ignorance often act impulsively, without considering the potential harm or negative consequences that may arise from their actions.

These actions are often motivated by delusion, confusion, or a distorted perception of reality. There is a lack of consideration for one’s own abilities, the well-being of others, and the long-term implications of the action.

Actions in the mode of ignorance can lead to destructive or harmful outcomes, both for oneself and others. They perpetuate a cycle of ignorance, suffering, and negativity. Such actions are devoid of wisdom, clarity, and spiritual understanding.

It is important to note that actions in the mode of ignorance are considered detrimental to one’s spiritual growth and overall well-being. They perpetuate ignorance and keep individuals bound to the cycle of birth and death.

In summary, actions performed in the mode of ignorance lack consideration for consequences, harm oneself and others, and arise from delusion or ignorance. They are driven by impulsiveness, a lack of discernment, and a distorted perception of reality. Such actions perpetuate ignorance and hinder spiritual growth.
