Commentary
Sanjaya, the narrator, addresses the King and shares his conviction regarding the auspiciousness that accompanies the presence of Lord Krishna and Prince Arjuna.
The term “yogeśhvaraḥ” refers to Krishna’s mastery over yoga and spiritual wisdom, highlighting His divine qualities and guidance. On the other hand, “Dhanurdhara” signifies Arjuna’s expertise in archery and his valor as a warrior.
Sanjaya states that wherever Krishna, the Master of Yoga, is present, and wherever Arjuna, the disciple-warrior, is present, there will be prosperity, victory, and unending glory. It reflects his deep belief in the positive and transformative impact that their collaboration can have on various aspects of life and endeavors.
It conveys the idea that when individuals possess both spiritual wisdom and skillful action, as exemplified by Bhagavan Krishna and Arjuna, they can achieve remarkable success and prosperity. It reflects the profound impact of their combined qualities and the conviction that their unity leads to positive outcomes in various aspects of life.
In his inner dialogue with his own blind mind (Dhritarashtra), which has usurped the throne of his consciousness – nurturing the seeds of deceitful Desire (Duryodhana), inflated Ego (Bhishma), ingrained Habit (Dronacharya), and a host of vices – the discerning voice of introspection (Sanjaya) within a devout soul asserts: “If I wholeheartedly embrace the divine essence of Krishna within me and surrender all my actions to His will like Arjuna, my path to victory and prosperity will be illuminated. Unburdened by the fruits of my deeds and fueled by unwavering devotion, if I can rise to the challenges of life’s battlefield, I shall find eternal peace in selfless service and liberation from the shackles of Samsāra.”
Expressing the thoughts of Sanjaya in a Sanskrit Poem by combining the last three verses:
संजय उवाच:
पुनः पुनः हरिदास्य चिन्तनं
बालार्जुनसंवादोत्सवं ततः।
विस्मयो मे महान्रोमाञ्चितं
राजते चित्तं सदा विभूषितम्॥
यत्र कृष्णो योगधिराजो नराणां
यत्र पार्थो धनुर्धरश्च मानवानाम्।
तत्र सिद्धिर्यशस्यश्च नीतिर्मम
जयोऽभिवृद्धिश्च न शोचितव्यम्॥
सर्वार्थसिद्धिस्तदा सन्तता यत्र
श्रीर्विजयश्चापि निरन्तरा स्थिता।
हृदि धारितं यत्र राजचेष्टितं
स्थिता ममैतच्छ्रुतं निश्चितम्॥
Translation:
Sanjaya said:
Again and again, the thought of Hari,
The grand dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna,
Fills my mind with awe and delight,
Adorning my consciousness with a wondrous glow.
Wherever Krishna, the King of Yoga, resides,
And wherever Arjuna, the wielder of the bow, stands,
There, prosperity, victory, and eternal glory,
Along with righteousness and renown, shall abound.
The fulfillment of all aspirations is assured,
And unceasing glory shall prevail,
With Krishna’s grace and Arjuna’s valor,
There is no room for despair or lamentation.
In that sacred space where all goals are achieved,
Where Sri, the divine radiance, and victory eternally reside,
Embracing my heart, steadfast and resolute,
This truth, I have heard and affirmed.
