Verse 3-43

एवं बुद्धे: परं बुद्ध्वा संस्तभ्यात्मानमात्मना |

जहि शत्रुं महाबाहो कामरूपं दुरासदम् || 43||

“Thus knowing the soul to be superior to the intellect, O mighty-armed Arjuna, subdue the self by the Self, and kill this formidable enemy called desire”

Commentary

The extraordinary power that is superior to buddhi is That (स:) called commonly as soul or Self. The Self is the identity within, that is unaffected by senses,thoughts, feelings and intellect. It is self-conscious of everything within Itself, everything in the universe just as we directly know everything in our body, heart and mind. It does not need inference or deduction to know its nature.

Man’s origin is not a small, tiny point somewhere inside the body from where he grows as an embryo, then builds organs and becomes a human body. Within the anandamaya kosha, man is an omnipresent consciousness of God constricted within a small space falsely identified with a tiny, temporary body. This identification with the body is the little self, which we refer to as ‘myself’ in daily communication. The lessons in the school of life are given to constantly forget the egoistic self, to destroy the small selfish identity, become selfless and merge in the bigger Self identity. Self is the ocean that contains the infinite waves of all the little selfs. O devotee, fight the daily battle to win control over your little self and its personal desires with the power of your higher Self, the soul within that is powerful and blissful.
