“Serene, fearless, with an unwavering mind, steadfast in Brahmacharya, the yogi should meditate on Me as the supreme goal.”
“By constantly keeping the mind absorbed in Me, the yogi attains supreme peace – Nirvana.”
Commentary: Sitting straight in the posture described in the earlier verses, the devotee should focus on uniting with God.
Serenity and an unwavering mind begin in silence – when the senses are in control. Man keeps his senses restless with constant activity over many years. He experiences calmness only in the silence of sleep. However, for a few minutes during the day, if he is able to calm the mind in a meditative state, then the power of silence can be experienced. In silence, intuition can be developed which helps to lead life on the right path.
The easiest comfort that one can have immediately without spending a dollar is to talk. Most people talk for hours and disturb others who are focused on achieving something worthwhile in life. Our power of speech can save or destroy another person, so we should know how and when to talk. As man grows older, he should maintain calm emotions, a focused mind, patience and cultivate a habit of being in deep silence. Constantly engaging the senses in the pleasures of entertainment depletes peace and happiness.
Only God knows why He created this world! The good thing for us humans is that He has given hope in the form of His teachings in Bhagavad Gita. Saints know that God prefers to talk and convey intuitive wisdom in silence. Therefore, by constantly withdrawing the mind to silently feel the great power moving the hands, legs, eyes and the entire body, the final answer to the mystery of life and death can be known directly from God. The yogi who experiences this ultimate answer in his intuition then attains supreme peace also called Nirvana.
