सुहृन्मित्रार्युदासीनमध्यस्थद्वेष्यबन्धुषु | साधुष्वपि च पापेषु समबुद्धिर्विशिष्यते || 9 || |

“He is a supreme yogi who regards everyone – friends, enemies, strangers, relatives, the virtuous and the sinful – with equal-mindedness”.
Commentary : The entire universe, with all its living and non-living beings, is the manifestation of the Supreme Being who dwells within it. A yogi who has conquered his senses, sees all people – friends, enemies, well-wishers, poor, rich, pious and sinful – with dispassionate intellect. It is the way a gardener looks at all his plants. He is interested in the overall well-being of his garden, so he makes necessary reformations – removes weeds, plants seeds, expects a few to go out of season and a few to bear fruits. In the end, he wants to see the garden bloom in the best possible way. Similarly in a society and within a family, a saint tries to remove the weeds of suffering, plants seeds of divinity, expects that only a few will reform and others will need more time or incarnations. It is a continuous process of care to keep the garden of one’s family and society blooming and flowering with divine beauty.
An untrained person is continuously subject to waves of happiness and sorrow in his day-to-day interactions with other people. Some people please him, others praise him, some hurt him, some disappoint him, some try to harm him and depending on others’ actions and external outcomes, a naive person reacts in different ways every day. Fixed in divine consciousness, the yogi sees potential divinity in all beings and acts wisely to guide humanity.
