“But know that besides this lower nature, O mighty-armed Arjuna, there is a higher divine nature, which is the very life-force that sustains the entire cosmos.”
Commentary: In the previous verse, Lord Krishna explained the nature and workings of Apara-Prakriti, the grosser manifestation of the human body and the Universal Physical Cosmic Body. Lord Krishna explains about His manifestation as the hidden Para-Prakriti, the subtler and higher divine aspect, forming the astral basis for the physical structure.
Apara-Prakriti represents the material world with its changing forms and dualities, while Para Prakriti represents the spiritual realm of unchanging consciousness and ultimate reality. Understanding the differences between the two helps us navigate the journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth.
Difference between Apara-Prakriti and Para-Prakriti
Apara Prakriti represents the lower or material aspect of nature. It encompasses the tangible and observable world that we perceive through our senses. This includes the physical elements of earth, water, fire, air, and space, as well as the subtle elements of mind, intellect, and ego. The Apara Prakriti is characterized by constant change, decay and transformation. It is subject to the laws of cause and effect, where actions lead to consequences. This realm is marked by duality, where opposites coexist, such as light and darkness, pleasure and pain, and birth and death. While the material elements and energies are subject to transformation and temporary manifestation, the Jiva or living entities possess consciousness and individuality, making them distinct from inert matter. The interactions of these opposing forces shape the experiences of life within the material world.
Para Prakriti, on the other hand, represents the higher or spiritual aspect of nature. It transcends the limitations of the physical realm and delves into the realm of pure consciousness. It is the underlying energy that pervades and sustains everything in the universe. Para Prakriti is beyond the boundaries of time, space, and causality. It is eternal and unchanging. While Apara Prakriti is subject to change and impermanence, Para Prakriti is considered the immutable and eternal essence that underlies all existence. It is the source from which the material world arises and to which it ultimately merges.
Although the Cosmic Intelligence operates through Aum to become both Natures, the distinction between Apara Prakriti and Para Prakriti highlights the dualistic nature of our experience in the manifest world, where we perceive the play of opposites and undergo the cycle of birth and death. At the same time, it emphasizes the transcendental and divine nature of the ultimate reality, which is beyond the limitations of the physical realm.
In spiritual practices and philosophies, the goal is often to transcend the realm of Apara Prakriti and merge with the higher reality of Para Prakriti. This is achieved through various spiritual disciplines such as meditation, self-realization, and cultivating a deeper understanding of the true nature of existence.
