Commentary

Maintaining unruffled calmness during the fluctuations of life is indeed a profound challenge, as highlighted in this verse. The key lies in understanding the distinction between the transient nature of the body and mind, and the enduring essence of the spirit or self.

Practicing mindfulness and self-awareness can help in recognizing when the mind and body are pulling in different directions. By observing these impulses without immediate reaction, one can gradually gain control over them. Techniques such as meditation, breath awareness, and introspection can aid in cultivating this awareness.

Furthermore, aligning actions with deeper values and goals can provide a sense of purpose that transcends momentary desires and impulses. When decisions are made from a place of inner clarity and conviction, one becomes less swayed by external circumstances.

Education and practices like yoga offer tools and frameworks for developing this inner mastery. Through disciplined practice and self-reflection, individuals can gradually shift from being at the mercy of their mind and body to becoming their master.

It is important to recognize that this journey towards equanimity is ongoing and requires patience and perseverance. By persistently striving to align with one’s higher purpose and disconnect from transient fluctuations, one can gradually cultivate the steady, calm, and focused mindset.
