तस्मादुत्तिष्ठ कौन्तेय युद्धाय कृतनिश्चय: || 37 ||

“If you fight, you will either get slain and gain heaven or you will conquer and enjoy the kingdom on earth. Therefore, O Arjuna, lift yourself up and fight”

Commentary

The person who fights against a problem or persists to achieve something noble becomes stronger in the process and if he wins, he enjoys the heaven of success. If he fails, he would have acquired sufficient merit that will allow him to win sooner or later. A person who fights against his own temptations, greed, lust, avarice and anger, will develop self-control and enjoy the heaven of subtle peace. The yogi who fights his sense-tendencies to find the Creator hiding behind the gross matter will enjoy the glorious heaven before coming back to earth again to win. If he conquers himself while alive, he will enjoy the transcendental heavenly consciousness on earth.

Duality exists within us in the form of two minds, two wills – of divine spirit and earthly flesh. You can feel the struggle within between these two wills – will to do what you like versus will to do the right thing. Most of the cosmic work is being done by God, including running our vital functions. He gave us a few voluntary powers of will, imagination, reason and emotion. When He is actively working, why shouldn’t we? God is taking care of all aspects in your body – functions of senses, mind, intellect, organs. In a way, He has given only five percent for us to manage but He manages the remaining ninety-five percent of the body. Within the five percent scope, we have the opportunity to exercise our calm will power to control our body and mind through regular exercise, proper nutrition, noble thoughts, calm feelings and Dharmic duties.

The first step is to create a powerful intention or Sankalpa. The second step is to train your will power to gradually bring back the mind away from distractions, to focus on the single intention. This is called Sankalpa-bal and this intention-led life clears difficult paths to give peace and success.

Where is heaven?

Heaven is the immediate world after earth where the person sees himself in the exact blueprint of the human body but made of light-firmament and electro-magnetic radiation along with material desires, ignorance, feelings and individualized self-awareness. This astral body does not suffer from disease and nothing physical can hurt it except desires and ignorance. This whole heavenly astral world is not beyond the skies above but passes through and behind the gross matter and is much bigger than the physical universe. A devotee who fights his sense-tendencies for higher joys and dies in the process becomes aware of this glorious astral world of subtle joy. If he conquers himself, then he enjoys the tangible things of the earth with another-worldly awareness. Lord Krishna, in the interiorized consciousness of the devotee, exhorts and reminds the devotee through his own intuition, the consequences of neglecting rightful duties.

Therefore, O dear devotee, arise and fight!
