Commentary
In response to Arjuna’s question, Lord Krishna explains that faith or shraddha exhibited by individuals is of three types, influenced by the three modes of material nature: goodness (sattva), passion (rajas), and ignorance (tamas).
Sattvic faith: This type of faith is characterized by purity, knowledge, and spiritual illumination. It is rooted in understanding and righteousness. Those possessing sattvic faith have a genuine reverence for the Supreme and the scriptures. They follow the prescribed rituals and injunctions with devotion and without personal ulterior motives. Their actions are motivated by spiritual growth, selflessness, and the desire to attain higher states of consciousness.
Rajasic faith: Rajasic faith is characterized by a desire for material gain, power, and recognition. Individuals with rajasic faith perform rituals and religious practices with the intention of achieving worldly success, wealth, and prestige. Their faith is often driven by personal ambition, ego, and attachment to results. They may follow some scriptural injunctions but with a focus on fulfilling their desires and satisfying their materialistic cravings.
Tamasic faith: Tamasic faith is rooted in ignorance, delusion, and darkness. Those with tamasic faith lack clarity, discernment, and spiritual understanding. Their faith is often associated with superstitious beliefs, irrational rituals, and practices that are contrary to the principles of righteousness. Their actions may involve harmful or negative intentions, and they may deviate from scriptural guidelines or engage in practices that exploit others.
