Verse 17-28

अश्रद्धया हुतं दत्तं तपस्तप्तं कृतं च यत् |

असदित्युच्यते पार्थ न च तत्प्रेत्य नो इह || 28 ||

“O Partha, whatever is offered as sacrifice, given as charity, performed as austerity, without faith, it is called “Asat.” It is neither beneficial in this life nor in the next.”

Commentary

Lord Krishna explains the consequences of performing actions without faith or sincerity. Lord Krishna states that when actions such as sacrifices (huta), charity (datta), and austerity (tapas) are carried out without faith or belief, they are considered “Asat.” The term “Asat” refers to actions that lack sincerity, devotion, or a genuine connection to higher principles. It indicates actions that are performed mechanically, devoid of genuine belief or spiritual understanding.

Lord Krishna further clarifies that such actions do not yield positive results either in the present life or in the afterlife. They do not bring about any real benefits, spiritual growth, or favorable outcomes. The lack of faith and sincerity undermines the efficacy and transformative power of these actions.

The verse highlights the importance of performing actions with a genuine sense of faith, belief, and dedication. It emphasizes the need for a sincere connection to higher principles, moral values, and spiritual understanding while engaging in acts of sacrifice, charity, and austerity.

In summary, Lord Krishna cautions Arjuna that actions performed without faith and sincerity are termed “Asat.” Such actions do not yield any positive results or spiritual progress. It underscores the significance of approaching actions with genuine devotion, belief, and understanding to derive true benefits and spiritual growth.
