Commentary
Lord Krishna instructs devotees on the path of devotion and surrender. He explains the qualities and attitudes that one should cultivate to attain a state of constant absorption in the divine consciousness.
The verse emphasizes the importance of aligning one’s mind, actions, and intellect with the divine. It begins by instructing devotees to offer all their actions to the divine and surrender the results of those actions to the divine will. This surrendering of actions is an act of renunciation, wherein one recognizes that they are not the sole doer or controller of the outcomes. By surrendering the actions to the divine, one develops an attitude of detachment, humility, and surrender.
Next, the verse encourages devotees to develop devotion and deep love for the divine. Being “matparaḥ” means being devoted to the divine, with a heart full of love and dedication. It is an attitude of total surrender and reliance on the divine’s grace.
Lord Krishna advises taking refuge in the “Buddhi Yoga” or the Yoga of intellect. This refers to cultivating an intellect that is aligned with the divine wisdom and guidance. It involves developing discriminative intelligence, discernment, and clarity of understanding. By seeking knowledge and wisdom from spiritual teachings, scriptures, and spiritual guides, one can align their intellect with the divine purpose and will.
The verse concludes by urging devotees to maintain a constant state of absorption in the divine consciousness. This is achieved by keeping the mind and consciousness focused on the divine, through regular spiritual practices such as meditation, prayer, and contemplation. By cultivating a continuous remembrance and awareness of the divine, one can experience a state of unity and oneness with the divine.
