अथ चेत्वमहङ्कारान्न श्रोष्यसि विनङ्क्ष्यसि || 58 ||

“With your consciousness absorbed in Me, you will overcome all obstacles by My grace. But if you become egotistical, thinking yourself to be the doer, you will surely be lost.”

Commentary

Lord Krishna emphasizes the significance of surrendering the ego and relying on the divine grace for success and liberation. He guides Arjuna, and by extension, all spiritual seekers, on the importance of maintaining the right attitude and perspective in their actions and spiritual practice.

Lord Krishna states that when one’s consciousness is absorbed in Him (machchitta), and their thoughts and actions are directed towards the divine, they will receive His grace and overcome all obstacles. By cultivating a deep sense of connection and surrender to the divine, one becomes an instrument through which the divine works. The divine grace supports and uplifts them on their spiritual journey, helping them overcome challenges and difficulties.

However, Lord Krishna cautions against the egoistic attitude of considering oneself to be the sole doer and controller of actions. If one becomes attached to their individual identity and develops a sense of pride, thinking that they alone are responsible for their achievements, they will deviate from the path of surrender and lose the support of divine grace. Ego leads to delusion and separation from the divine, hindering one’s spiritual progress.

The verse highlights the importance of humility, recognizing that all abilities and accomplishments come from the divine. By acknowledging the divine as the ultimate doer and surrendering the ego, one opens themselves to the flow of divine grace and guidance. It is a reminder that true success and liberation come from aligning oneself with the divine will and relying on divine support.

Therefore, the verse encourages individuals to cultivate humility, surrender the ego, and rely on the divine grace for guidance and accomplishment. By acknowledging the divine as the source of all abilities and outcomes, one transcends the limitations of the ego and experiences the transformative power of divine grace in their life.
