अहङ्कारविमूढात्मा कर्ताहमिति मन्यते || 27||

“All activities are carried out by the influence of the three modes of Nature. But he who is deluded by false identification with the body, thinks of himself as the doer.”

Commentary

Man is influenced by the three inherent forces or qualities present in Prakriti. These are sattvic, rajasic and tamasic qualities. Sattvic quality motivates a person to pursue noble aspirations and wish for the well-being of all creatures. It results in calmness, self-discipline, peace and wisdom. Rajasic quality in Prakriti drives one to accumulate and possess material things confining the well-being to a few people. It results in ever-increasing wants, desires, hopes and fears. Tamasic quality is evil in nature that ends in suffering.

Until final emancipation is achieved, every thought and action is influenced by a combination of at least two of the three qualities. With will power and training, one can make a choice to side with sattvic quality. Prakriti is represented as Divine Mother who expresses these three qualities of calmness, restless activity and fearful chaos. Sattvic quality brings peace and wisdom but still causes rebirth until one overcomes ignorance. The duty of God as Divine Mother, Prakriti or Nature is to push man from tamasic to rajasic to sattvic and final liberation. She makes man perform those actions which will move him toward the ultimate goal. Entering the cusp of Dwapara Yuga in the ascending cycle of yugas, the current age has brought great achievements in science and large awareness in yoga. Man should believe that She is the doer and utilize this opportunity to achieve permanent bliss.
