Commentary
Influenced by the three gunas in Nature, ignorant people perform actions thinking themselves to be the doers. They cannot consider actions as duties, without expecting rewards and fulfillment of personal desires.
Lord Krishna cautions saints to be careful in their words and actions while interacting with common people. By persuading an unwilling person to believe that this world is delusion, he is a soul not the body, and the soul is actionless, the saint is not really providing any help. Instead he is unintentionally motivating the person to be tamasic without doing any actions. Spiritual advice is for active seekers who want to decipher the meaning of life.
It is equally important for people to stay away from those who could ‘inspire’ them to leave families and society. A worldly man who is fulfilling responsibilities for his family and society is far better than a self-declared saint who disturbs a hard working person with his sermon of non-attachment or who performs so-called miracles raising unnecessary alarm. Spirituality is a slow transformation in a person who has experienced life in its entirety and has a sincere desire to seek something that gives permanent peace and happiness. Although it is important for a saint to be actively sharing knowledge it is equally wise to be patient enough in the interest of everyone’s well-being.
