“As a lamp in a windless place does not flicker, so the mind of the yogi, practicing meditation on the Self, remains steady and focused.”
Commentary: A tiny flame of light in an earthenware saucer filled with oil will not waver if there is no wind. Similarly if there are no thoughts, the mind can remain steady with inward focus and perceive the tiny flame of soul flickering in the inner darkness.
The movement of eyeballs can change the state of consciousness. Looking down induces subconscious sleep and looking straight keeps one awake. Looking up at the tip of the nose between the eyebrows, as described in verse 6-13, initiates higher spiritual consciousness. A blank mind without any thoughts attracts tramp souls waiting to occupy and experience the physical body. To avoid such intrusions, one needs to focus at the point between the eyebrows, with or without an image of God. The distinctive Hindu mark of kumkum or red turmeric is kept to respect and honor this sacred point and utilize it as a channel to become divine.
The mind of a yogi who is focused on the Self (the true nature of the individual) remains calm, steady, and undisturbed by external distractions. This requires discipline and concentration, as well as a commitment to the practice of yoga and meditation.
