Verse 6-35

श्रीभगवानुवाच |

असंशयं महाबाहो मनो दुर्निग्रहं चलम् |

अभ्यासेन तु कौन्तेय वैराग्येण च गृह्यते || 35 ||

Lord Krishna said: “Undoubtedly, O mighty-armed son of Kunti, the mind is restless and difficult to restrain. However, through practice and detachment, it can be controlled.”

Commentary: The mind often wanders, gets distracted, and is easily influenced by desires and external stimuli. However, with practice (abhyāsa) and detachment (vairāgya), the mind can be brought under control.

Abhyāsa refers to the consistent effort and discipline in focusing the mind on a chosen goal. It involves repeated practice and training to develop concentration and mental discipline. Vairāgya refers to detachment or dispassion toward sensory objects and the outcomes of one’s actions. It is the ability to let go of attachments and desires, recognizing their temporary and impermanent nature.

Lord Krishna says that by cultivating these two qualities, abhyāsa and vairāgya, one can gain mastery over the restless mind.
