Verse 6-36

असंयतात्मना योगो दुष्प्राप इति मे मति: |

वश्यात्मना तु यतता शक्योऽवाप्तुमुपायत: || 36 ||

“For one with an uncontrolled mind, yoga is difficult to attain. But for one who has self-control and strives with the right means, it is attainable.”

Commentary: A mind that is restless, agitated, and easily swayed by desires and distractions finds it difficult to engage in the practices of yoga effectively. Self-control (vaśhyātmanā) implies having mastery over one’s own mind, senses, and impulses. It involves restraining the mind from wandering and being driven by external stimuli.

By exercising self-discipline and using the right means (upāya), such as following the guidance of a qualified teacher, practicing meditation, and observing moral and ethical principles, one can gradually attain the state of yoga.
