“Miscreants, foolish people and lowest among mankind, whose knowledge is stolen by illusion, and who are attached to the demonic nature, do not surrender to Me.”
Commentary: Lord Krishna explains that individuals who lack wisdom, deluded by the illusory energy (Maya) and are engaged in sinful activities, do not surrender to Him. These individuals are referred to as “duṣhkṛitino” (people who perform wrong or bad actions) and “narādhamāḥ” (lowest among mankind). Their knowledge is stolen by Maya, which means they are bewildered by material illusions and are unable to perceive the spiritual truth. They become attached to the demonic nature characterized by lust, anger, greed, and envy. Due to their deluded state of mind, they fail to recognize the need for surrendering to the Supreme Lord.
Surrendering to the Lord requires a certain level of understanding, humility, and purity of heart. Those who are engaged in sinful activities and are deeply attached to material desires find it difficult to surrender to the Lord. Their minds are clouded by ignorance, and they are driven by ego and self-centeredness. They remain entangled in the cycle of material existence, unable to access the divine mercy and grace that come through surrendering to the Supreme.
This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of cultivating knowledge, spiritual understanding, and a sincere desire for self-realization to approach the path of surrender and devotion to the Supreme Lord.
