“Renunciation of sense objects, absence of ego, and reflecting on the defects of birth, old age, disease, and death”

Commentary

Renunciation of sense objects (vairāgyam): This quality signifies the detachment and dispassion towards material possessions, sensory pleasures, and worldly attachments. It involves recognizing the impermanence and transitory nature of external objects and desires.

Absence of ego (anahankāra): It refers to the absence of a false sense of individuality or identification with the ego. It involves realizing the interconnectedness of all beings and transcending the notion of a separate self.

Reflecting on the defects of birth, old age, disease, and death: This practice involves contemplation and awareness of the inherent limitations and sufferings associated with the cycle of life. It helps cultivate a sense of detachment and a broader perspective on the transient nature of worldly existence.
