Commentary
Lord Krishna explains that the individual living entities in the material world are not separate from Him but are His eternal fragmental parts. This implies that every living being has a spiritual essence and a connection with the Supreme.
However, despite being eternal parts of the Supreme, the living entities are currently bound by material nature. The influence of material nature causes them to identify themselves with the temporary material body and become entangled in the complexities of material existence. Consequently, they experience struggles and challenges in their interactions with the material world.
The verse mentions that these struggles are primarily due to the influence of the mind and the five senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell) that are associated with it. The mind, as the seat of consciousness and perception, becomes a source of attachment, desires, and distractions. The senses, under the control of the mind, seek gratification through sensory experiences in the material realm.
The word “karshati” in the verse indicates that the living entities are engaged in a continuous struggle or conflict with the senses and the mind. This struggle arises from their entanglement with material nature and their identification with the temporary material body, which leads to various desires, attachments, and the pursuit of sense enjoyment.
In summary, this verse highlights the eternal nature of the living entities as fragments of the Supreme and their current struggle in the material world due to their identification with the body and the influence of the mind and senses. It emphasizes the need for spiritual awakening and the realization of our eternal relationship with the Supreme, which can help us transcend the struggles of material existence and attain spiritual liberation
