Verse 17-12

अभिसन्धाय तु फलं दम्भार्थमपि चैव यत् |

इज्यते भरतश्रेष्ठ तं यज्ञं विद्धि राजसम् || 12 ||

“But that sacrifice which is offered for some material benefit or with a desire for fruitive results, as also the one performed with ostentation, know that to be in the mode of passion, O best of the Bharatas.”

Commentary

This verse highlights the characteristic of a Rajasic (mode of passion) person who performs sacrifices or rituals with a desire for material gains or with a showy and ostentatious attitude. Such a person engages in religious activities seeking personal benefits, rewards, or social recognition rather than performing the rituals with a selfless and devotional mindset.

The verse suggests that a Rajasic individual performs sacrifices for specific material outcomes, such as wealth, fame, power, or social status. The motivation behind their actions is driven by ego, ambition, and a desire for external validation.

This verse emphasizes that the sacrifices performed with materialistic intentions or for self-glorification fall under the mode of passion. It implies that such actions are driven by self-centered desires and lack the purity and selflessness found in Sattvic (mode of goodness) practices.
