“The one who has attained the state of Brāhman, whose mind is serene, neither grieves nor desires, and who is equal towards all beings, attains supreme devotion to Me.”

Commentary

Lord Krishna describes the qualities and state of being of a person who has become united with the ultimate reality, Brāhman.

The term “Brahmabhūtaḥ” refers to the one who has realized their essential nature as Brāhman. It signifies the state of self-realization, where the individual recognizes their oneness with the ultimate reality beyond the limitations of the ego. Such a person becomes “prasannātmā,” meaning their mind is serene, peaceful, and free from disturbances. They transcend the dualities of the material world and abide in a state of inner contentment.

The verse states that the one who has attained the state of Brāhman does not experience sorrow (na śocati) or desire (na kāṅkṣati). This does not imply apathy or indifference, but rather a state of being beyond the fluctuations of worldly desires and attachments. They are free from the cycle of longing for things that are transient and unreal, as they have realized the eternal and all-pervading nature of Brāhman.

The person who has attained Brahmanhood is described as “samaḥ sarveṣhu bhūteṣhu,” meaning they see the same divinity in all beings and remain equanimous towards them. They possess an equal vision, devoid of any discrimination or partiality based on external differences such as caste, creed, or social status. They recognize the underlying unity in diversity and treat all beings with love and compassion.

Finally, the verse concludes by stating that such an individual attains “madbhaktiṁ labhate parām,” the supreme devotion to the Supreme Being, Lord Krishna. Their realization of oneness with Brāhman leads to a deep and unconditional love for the divine, which becomes the driving force behind their thoughts, actions, and interactions with the world. They experience a profound sense of devotion and surrender to the divine presence in all aspects of life.
