Commentary
In the beginning, Brahma was self-existent and Absolute but He wanted to become many. According to Shatapatha Brahmana Khanda 13, Adhyaya 7, Brahmaṇa 1, Brahma is described as sacrificing Himself – ‘brahma vai swayambhu, tapo tapyata’. He was performing tapas (austerity) and reflected, “Let me sacrifice myself in living things and all living things in myself.” Having sacrificed Himself, he attained self-effulgence and supreme dominion.
A little introspection will help us understand that none of the body parts or functions are created or run by man or any scientific instrument – eyes, nose, ears, lungs, heart, processes of digestion, circulation, heartbeat and the work of a trillion cells! Man has not created anything in Nature, he just assembles things together for fulfilment. The body along with Nature’s laws are run by the divine manifestations of God who work tirelessly performing their respective duties. To continue to enjoy a healthy body, its functions and the related material prosperities, man must pay obeisance to the Divine Ones regularly.
There is a deeper yajna that a man makes unknowingly. He begins to start yajna with inner qualities from a young age when he offers friendship, then skills to society, companionship to spouse, parenthood to kids, devotion to parents, charity to society and finally his own form at the end of his life to God. These actions can be done consciously as offerings to God in everyone. The devotee’s level of commitment to please the Creator in everyone, by performing such yajnas will accordingly bring out the best in him leading to material prosperity.
The most esoteric meaning is the offering of one’s own prana to God in Samadhi Yoga and attain self-effulgence like Brahma. Ignorance is vanished when the devotee finds spiritual prosperity in the divine knowledge of his origin, destination and his true essence within the constant change. He finds Himself in everyone and everyone in Himself.
