“Free from attachment, fear and anger, completely engrossed and taking refuge in Me, many beings have become purified in the fire of wisdom and attained Me”

Commentary

In order to attain union with such a Divine Being whose infinite consciousness encompasses universes floating around in perfect order, the devotee requires a few qualities. The common man oscillates between strong hope that all will be fine and strong fear that something might happen. The cause for hope could be belief in God, one’s goodness, some philosophy or just self-belief. Inspite of such belief, unmet hopes and expectations lead to anxiety and anger. It is not easy to turn inward because in inner silence these submerged feelings surface to the conscious mind. Not knowing how to deal with them, people tend to avoid inner silence in preference to the cacophony of the sweet senses.

Exposed to the senses over a long period of time, people develop personal attachments for people, things, their own habits and beliefs. It becomes difficult to break habits and question the basis of beliefs objectively. Subsequently personal attachments impinge deeper on the subconscious mind. This interplay of attachment (raga), fear (bhaya) and anger (krodha) is the cause for endless suffering. Therefore the devotee should strive to turn the mind inward in reflection and deep introspection.

Through yoga, the mind can be trained to become completely engrossed within. Slowly the devotee finds himself automatically surrendering to God with complete devotion.
