“Offering the results of all activities to God, the yogi attains everlasting peace. Those who are ruled by desires become entangled because they are attached to the fruits of desires”
Commentary :
Personal attachment to the body and possessions is the root cause of suffering. In Vedanta, the soul’s quality is commonly referred to as space, akasha or Kham (खं). One way to think is that our essential nature is similar to space. The self exists as a particle in space that dons a physical body because of personal desires. Space is infinite and does not have any boundaries. When the ātma as a particle of space expands its consciousness, it becomes one with Paramātma. Once a soul with the nature of pure space (खं) wears the physical body, it starts to experience the dualities of SuKham (सुखं) and DuKham (दु:खं), the polar opposites of happiness and suffering.
Desire must be fulfilled in the existing body or a new birth is required if the existing body is not capable of having the experience. For example, if a person carries a desire to be a billionaire but is unable to fulfill it in his current birth, he has to be born again and again till he experiences the desire. Nature will help everyone to fulfill their desires but it could take millions of years for a desire to manifest. It is true that the universe helps you to realize your desires if you have a sincere longing, however the wise yogi does not enslave himself in the cycle of births. He does not entertain new desires and extinguishes the residual desires through purification. Bodily experience is a temporary medication to desire but God’s Bliss is a permanent cure that removes the root of all desires.
