Verse 5-14

न कर्तृत्वं न कर्माणि लोकस्य सृजति प्रभु: |

न कर्मफलसंयोगं स्वभावस्तु प्रवर्तते || 14 ||

“God does not create the consciousness in man that he is the doer of actions, cause of actions, nor does He entangle man with the fruits of actions. All these are enacted by delusive Cosmic Nature”

Commentary : Lord Krishna, without referring to Himself, says that God whom people worship does not create any of the following thoughts in humans: ‘I am the doer of actions’, ‘I am the cause of actions’ and ‘I desire the results of my actions’. The three Gunās in Nature are responsible for all the above thoughts. These intrinsic gunās in Nature are sattvic, rajasic and tamasic which cause or instigate divine, human and evil tendencies respectively in human consciousness. Man’s evolution depends directly on the control he has over these gunās. Today’s challenges cannot be solved by the person you are now but the future person that you are becoming. Circumstances cannot change by worshiping God and continuing with old behavior. Change is difficult not only for man but for God also because He is bound by His own laws. He will not bless a drunkard to become sober because he worships God daily. Even if God changes him by force, within a few days the drunkard will be back to his bar because he is not exercising his own will power. Without the drunkard’s strong will and dedicated cooperation to change to new and better evolutionary habits, even God cannot intervene. Without our strong will to change, if God tries to change us, it will be spiritual coercion. The mighty God who rules universes does not condescend to such actions for paltry human promises. His help is ever present to those who are willing to learn and change. Therefore, it is important to understand that we are the makers of our own destiny. As explained in the previous verse, we need to strive very hard to overcome these gunās, rule the kingdom of body with self-control and then hand over the responsibility to God so He can use the body as His instrument to continue to inspire His children to follow His teachings.
