“Those whose minds are focused with equanimity to conquer the cycle of birth and death in this very life. They are established in the flawless and perfectly balanced state of Brāhman”
Commentary : Equanimity is often misconceived as a state of indifference or numbness towards the fluctuations of happiness and sorrow in life. However, true equanimity transcends such emotional detachment. It doesn’t entail becoming an impassive wall, devoid of feelings or concern for the world.
Instead, equanimity embodies the capacity to maintain a clear and balanced perspective amidst life’s myriad emotions and challenges. It enables one to discern the right course of action, regardless of the highs and lows encountered along the way.
In the game of dice when the Pāndavas lost everything, they went to the forest. They followed Dharma and accepted their fate instead of blaming Lord Krishna, their cousin and savior, for not protecting them. With a balanced mind, they kept faith in Him and worked out their karma.
In spite of knowing the result, Krishna still went as an ambassador to negotiate with Kauravas to prevent war. He had the power to annihilate Kauravas completely but still did not get influenced by His own mighty powers. He followed Dharma as a charioteer and guided Arjuna. Lord Krishna and Pāndavas experienced all the emotions of pain, loss and anger but did not deviate from doing right and lawful actions.
Those who are anchored in wisdom understand that true equanimity is not about suppressing emotions or denying their impact, but rather about harnessing inner clarity and strength to navigate life’s complexities with integrity and purpose. They are able to act in accordance with what is just and righteous, irrespective of the fluctuating tides of emotion. In essence, equanimity arises from a deep-seated alignment with truth and virtue, fostering a state of inner balance and harmony amid life’s ever-changing circumstances.
