Verse 1

"The Supreme Lord said: There is an eternal Ashvattha tree with roots above and boughs beneath, and whose leaves are the Vedic hymns. One who knows this tree is the knower of the Vedas."

Verse 2

“Below and above, spreading far and wide, are the branches nourished by the qualities; sense objects are their buds, and below, extending into the world of humans, are the roots that bind actions.”

Verse 3

Verse 4

"The true form of this tree is not perceived in this world, nor its beginning, nor its end, nor its continued existence. But this deeply rooted Ashvattha tree must be cut down with the sharp axe of detachment.”

Verse 5

"Those who are free from the delusion of ego, who have conquered attachment, who are ever devoted to the spiritual path, who have transcended desires, who are unaffected by dualities of pleasure and pain, they attain the imperishable state and reach the eternal abode."

Verse 6

“The sun does not illumine it, nor the moon, nor fire. That is My supreme abode, and having gone there, they do not return to the material world.”

Verse 7

“The living beings in this material realm are eternal fragments of Myself. However, entangled by material nature, they endure a constant struggle with the senses, including the mind."

Verse 8

“Just as the breeze transports fragrances from one location to another, in a similar way, when the embodied soul departs from its old body and enters a new one, it carries its mind and senses along”

Verse 9

“The ears, eyes, sense of touch, taste, and sense of smell, along with the mind as their foundation, enable the embodied soul to engage with and experience the objects of the senses.”

Verse 10

“Those lacking wisdom fail to perceive the soul's presence within the body, its engagement with sensory experiences, and its departure upon death. However, those enlightened with knowledge can truly witness the soul in all its manifestations.”

Verse 11

“Even diligent yogis can perceive the soul established within themselves, whereas those who have not purified their minds are unable to perceive it, despite their endeavors.”

Verse 12

“Know that I am the radiant energy present in the sun, which illuminates the entire universe. Understand that the luminosity of the moon and the fire also derive from Me.”

Verse 13

“I sustain all living beings on earth with My energy, and as the moon, I nurture plants with the essence of life.”

Verse 14

“I am the universal fire known as Vaisvanara, residing within the bodies of all living beings. I am intimately connected with the life-giving breaths of inhalation and exhalation. I am responsible for digesting and assimilating the four types of food.”

Verse 15

“I am present in the hearts of all beings. From Me arise memory, knowledge, and forgetfulness. I am the one to be known through all the Vedas. I am the author of the Vedanta and the knower of the Vedas.”

Verse 16

“There are two kinds of beings in this world, the perishable and the imperishable. The imperishable is the Supreme Truth, and the perishable is all of creation.”

Verse 17

“The supreme soul, known as the Uttama Purusha, is distinct and separate from the individual souls in the material world. This Supreme Soul sustains and permeates all three realms of existence.”

Verse 18

“Because I transcend the perishable and am even higher than the imperishable, I am celebrated in both the material world and in the Vedas as the Supreme Person.”

Verse 19

“Those who know Me in this way, as the Supreme Personality, without any delusion, worship Me with all their being, O Arjuna.”

Verse 20

“This supremely confidential knowledge has been revealed by me, O sinless one. Understanding this, one becomes wise and fulfills all their duties, O descendant of Bharata.”
