Details

Verse 1

“He is the true renunciant and a true yogi who performs material duties and spiritual actions without desiring their fruits - not he who does not perform any fire sacrifice and abandons action.”

Verse 2

"O Arjuna! That which is called as renunciation in scriptures is the same as yoga; he who has not given up personal desire cannot be a yogi.”

Verse 3

Verse 4

“For a sage who wishes to ascend to yoga, action is ‘the way’. Inaction is ‘the way’ for the one who has attained yoga.”

“That person is said to have attained Yoga who has overcome attachment to sense objects and to actions, and who is free from all ego-instigated plans.”

Verse 5

verse 6

“Uplift yourself through the power of your Self and do not degrade yourself; for the self can be the friend and also the enemy of the self”

“For those who have conquered the self, it is their friend. For those who have failed to do so, the self works like an enemy.”

Verse 7

“That person who is victorious over the self rises above the dualities of cold and heat, pleasure and pain, praise and blame. He remains peaceful and steadfast in devotion to God”.

Verse 8

"That yogi who is absorbed in knowledge and realization remains serene and united in God. As conqueror of his senses, he sees everything - earth, stone, and gold - as same"

Verse 9

“He is a supreme yogi who regards everyone - friends, enemies, strangers, relatives, the virtuous and the sinful - with equal-mindedness".

Verse 10

"Free from desires and longing for possessions, in seclusion and in full control of the heart and mind, the yogi should unite with his soul."

Verse 11

verse 12

Verse 13

"In a clean spot, a firm seat should be made, neither too high nor too low, and it should be covered by kusha grass, deer skin and a cloth, one over the other."

Seated firmly on it, let the yogi strive to purify the mind by focusing it with one pointed concentration, controlling all thoughts and activities.

He must hold the body, neck, and head firmly in a straight line, and gaze at the tip of the nose, without allowing the eyes to wander."

Verse 14

Verse 15

“Serene, fearless, with an unwavering mind, steadfast in Brahmacharya, the yogi should meditate on Me as the supreme goal.”

“By constantly keeping the mind absorbed in Me, the yogi attains supreme peace - Nirvana.”

Verse 16

Verse 17

“O Arjuna, those who eat too much or too little, sleep too much or too little, cannot attain success in Yoga.”

“Those who eat, work, relax and remain awake with a regulated balance can mitigate all sorrows by practicing Yoga”

Verse 18

“When the mind, controlled by the practice of yoga, remains fixed on the Self alone, then the yogi is said to be in a state of inner peace and contentment, free from all material desires.”

Verse 19

“As a lamp in a windless place does not flicker, so the mind of the yogi, practicing meditation on the Self, remains steady and focused."

verse 20

“When the mind is restrained through the practice of yoga, then the yogi perceives and rejoices in the inner Self"

Verse 21

“In that joyous state of inner perception, one experiences limitless joy, and thus established, never deviates from the Eternal Truth.”

Verse 22

"Having gained that, he does not think of any other acquisition as superior. Established in that state, he is not shaken even by the heaviest sorrow."

Verse 23

“That state is known as yoga—the pain-free state. The practice of yoga is, therefore, to be observed resolutely and with a stout heart.”

Verse 24

Verse 25

“Abandoning all desires that arise in the mind, restraining all the senses and focusing on the Self alone, remain steadfast and absorbed in contemplation.”

"Gradually, step by step, with a strong conviction, withdraw from all material concerns and fix the mind on the Self alone, without thinking of anything else.”

Verse 26

“Whenever the mind becomes restless and unsteady, one should restrain with control and continuously focus it on God.”

Verse 27

“Peace comes to that yogi whose mind is completely calm and whose passions are subdued, who is free from sin and who has become one with Brahman.”

Verse 28

“Thus always practicing union with God, the yogi becomes free from sinful delusion and attains the highest bliss resulting from contact with Brahman.”

Verse 29

“The yogi who is established in God sees all living beings in the Self and the Self in all living beings; he sees the same essence everywhere”

Verse 30

“He who sees Me in all beings and all beings in Me never loses sight of Me nor I lose sight of him.”

Verse 31

“He who worships Me as the One existing in everything and is firmly established in Me is in the highest state of yoga”

Verse 32

“He is the perfect yogi who sees all living beings equally and considers the joys and sorrows of others as his own.”

Verse 33

"O Madhusudana, due to my restless nature, I am unable to perceive the steady and equalizing effect of yoga that you described."

Verse 34

"O Krishna, the mind is certainly restless, turbulent, strong and stubborn. I consider it as difficult to control as the wind."

Verse 35

Lord Krishna said: “Undoubtedly, O mighty-armed son of Kunti, the mind is restless and difficult to restrain. However, through practice and detachment, it can be controlled.”

Verse 36

“For one with an uncontrolled mind, yoga is difficult to attain. But for one who has self-control and strives with the right means, it is attainable.”

Verse 37

Arjuna asked, "What is the fate of the yogi who lacks steadfastness, whose mind is restless in the pursuit of yoga, who begins the path with faith but is unable to reach the goal of Yoga in this life?

Verse 38

"Doesn't someone with an unsettled mind, lacking faith and deviating from the path of yoga, fail to achieve success in both material and spiritual realms? O mighty-armed Krishna, don't they perish like a scattered cloud with no place or standing in either domain?"

Verse 39

"Krishna, please dispel this doubt of mine completely. For there is no one else who can give clarity except you.”

Verse 40

The Supreme Lord said, “O Partha, neither in this world nor in the next is there destruction for him. Indeed, my dear, one who performs virtuous deeds never ends in adversity."

Verse 41

verse 42

“Having enjoyed the vast heavenly realms as a result of their virtuous deeds, they are then born in the homes of the righteous and affluent, to continue their spiritual practice.”

“Alternatively, they are born into a family of yogis characterized by spiritual wisdom. Certainly such a birth is extremely rare in this world”

Verse 43

“Upon taking birth again in this world, they regain the wisdom of previous lives and strive further for perfection, O Kurunandan."

Verse 44

“Indeed, by virtue of past practice, they are automatically drawn to yoga, even against their will. Such seekers transcend the rituals described in the scriptures."

Verse 45

"With the accumulated merits of many past births, when a yogi endeavors to make further progress, he becomes purified and attains perfection."

Verse 46

“A yogi is greater than the ascetics, greater than the knowledgeable, and greater than those who perform rituals. Therefore, O Arjuna, be a yogi!"

Verse 47

"Among all yogis, the one with unwavering faith who constantly remembers Me and worships Me with devotion, is considered by Me to be the most intimately united with Me."
